Korattur Lake, a vital water body in Chennai, has recently undergone a much-needed cleaning initiative aimed at restoring its ecological balance and improving its aesthetic appeal. The cleanup began with the removal of plastic waste and other non-biodegradable materials that had accumulated both in the water and along the banks, posing a threat to aquatic life and polluting the environment. Volunteers and workers also focused on clearing the dense growth of water hyacinth, an invasive species that was choking the lake and hindering water flow. This not only helped in improving the water quality but also allowed sunlight to reach the aquatic ecosystem, benefiting fish and other organisms. In addition, several unwanted and non-native trees around the lake were chopped down to prevent root intrusion into the lakebed and to make space for native vegetation. Special attention was also given to the walking trail surrounding the lake, which had become uneven and littered over time. The path was cleaned, leveled, and made accessible again for morning walkers and joggers, turning the area into a more inviting public space.
